Blue Monday

COLLAGES BY GUILHERME LEPCA

Vermelho – Red

Amarelo – Yellow

Somente O Verde – Green

Feeling a little low at the start of this week, but these vibrant, monochromatic-themed collages by Guilherme Lepca have brightened my mood — color therapy usually does. I hope they do the same for you.

Ace is the Place

ACE HOTEL MURAL BY TIMOTHY GOODMAN

As a designer of brand experiences, I am crazy-go-nuts about checking out interesting environments. Based on several recommendations from friends and this sensational, hand-drawn wall mural by Timothy Goodman, I’m mandating a stay at the Ace Hotel on my next trip to NYC.

Make a Great Impression

WILD AIR POSTER BY STUDIO ON FIRE

Studio On Fire offers both design services and letterpress printing under one roof, a genius combination that only adds to the exceptional production quality of their beautiful work. I featured them in this previous post, and hope that I find myself in Minneapolis sometime so I might visit them in person.

Is it time for new business cards yet? Hmmm…

Posterrific!

POSTER DESIGN BY WARM GRAPHICS

What is it about the modern music gig poster?

When I saw my first Rolling Stone layout designed by Fred Woodward with its power-packed typographic inventiveness, it was about the same time that I’d chosen my major of Visual Communications / Graphic Design at MICA. The music industry seemed to offer up such a lush concoction of subject matter, a job that would allow you interpret that spirit into a 2-D art form was a pretty sweet deal.

These compelling designs by Warm Graphics aptly bring to life feel of the music behind each poster —  in rich color and swirling symbolism. What’s not to love?

Type as Art

HAND LETTERING BY DANIELLE DAVIS

Completely charmed by this playful bit of hand drawn type by Danielle Davis. She’s thinking about setting it in letterpress or silkscreen — yes, please!

The Softer Side of Science

SCIENCE PROJECT PILLOWS BY HEATHER LINS

Sporting diagrams clipped from the pages of old Biology and Earth Sciences textbooks, these Science Project Pillows make a fun decorative accent. More than quirky and colorful, the materials are eco-friendly, too.

Nice Work!

TOUR POSTERS BY CONCEPCION STUDIOS

Just about any creative can make something sweet on a big budget. In my book, the true test of a great designer is when a client comes to you with five bucks and a chicklet and you deliver something gorgeous. These two-color posters by Concepcion Studios are a perfect example.

There’s something about the flowing, whimsical orderliness of Jonathan Calugi’s designs — how can it be so precise and organic all at the same time? Page through more of his impressive work on his site.

You Spin Me Right Round

ALBUM ART FROM PROJECT THIRTY-THREE

Dedicated to the art of the vintage album label, Project Thirty-Three catalogs an impressive and expanding collection of record jackets, all categorized by graphic shape.

I’ve got a huge soft spot for mid-century album art — such a wonderful homage to our design forefather’s deft ability to convey the style of music with only ruled boards, amberlith, hot/film type, photography, stats, and hand drawn line (imagine, all before computers).

More posts like this to come.
