Ace is the Place

ACE HOTEL MURAL BY TIMOTHY GOODMAN

As a designer of brand experiences, I am crazy-go-nuts about checking out interesting environments. Based on several recommendations from friends and this sensational, hand-drawn wall mural by Timothy Goodman, I’m mandating a stay at the Ace Hotel on my next trip to NYC.

Take a Letter

RANDOM SELECTIONS FROM LETTERHEADY

Matt Groening (1991)

Gene Roddenberry (1967)

Harry Houdini (1920)

Hugh Hefner (1955)

Albert Einstein (1932)

Again, this is why I LOVE the internet. I just stumbled across Letterheady, an eclectic and expansive collection of letterhead designs. It’s an amazing homage to a medium that, when done well, can completely capture the essence of personality. *Sigh* I could get lost here for hours.

Playing with Matches

SHAILESH CHAVDA’S PHOTOSTREAM

Matchbox labels may seem like an odd choice for design medium, but the art form dates back to the mid-1800s. What began as basic branding (eg. marking with a manufacturer’s crest), evolved into complex narrative fueled engravings of the Victorian era, then distilled into more simplified type and graphic compositions.

My absolute favorites are the Swiss and German modernist inspired labels from the 1960s. Take a peek at Shailesh Chavda’s Flickr stream for a vast and impressive collection of vintage matchbox label designs.
