Playing with Matches

Matchbox labels may seem like an odd choice for design medium, but the art form dates back to the mid-1800s. What began as basic branding (eg. marking with a manufacturer’s crest), evolved into complex narrative fueled engravings of the Victorian era, then distilled into more simplified type and graphic compositions.

My absolute favorites are the Swiss and German modernist inspired labels from the 1960s. Take a peek at Shailesh Chavda’s Flickr stream for a vast and impressive collection of vintage matchbox label designs.
