No Time Like the Present

“Do what you love, and don’t stop until you get what you love. Work as hard as you can, imagine immensities, don’t compromise, and don’t waste time. Start now.”

DEBBIE MILLMAN, from Look Both Ways

Public Works

Taking to the London streets this summer are 250 brightly decorated, life-sized elephant statues. Each is a creation of a different artist or celebrity, aimed at highlighting the plight of the endangered Asian elephant. Elephant Parade : London 2010 will be auctioning the figures with the aim of raising funds to benefit 20 UK conservation charities.

Sponsored by Elephant Family (elephantfamily.org) which is helping to protect the habitat and support the welfare of Asian elephants.

Woman with Face Net, 2000

With so many credits to her name (photographer, illustrator, author, wife and creative collaborator of design great, Tibor Kalman), it’s no wonder that Maira Kalman has merited her own museum exhibition. Best known for her uniquely humorous illustrations, the exhibit showcases 3o years of work — from preliminary sketches to embroidery to objects from her own collections.

The show Maira Kalman: Various Illuminations (of a Crazy World) can be seen at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia (ICA), through June 6, 2010.
